Paint correction is the process of removing defects from a vehicle's clear coat rather than hiding them. It solves the specific problem of paint that is clean but still looks dull, cloudy or cobwebbed in direct sun, because the surface is covered in thousands of fine scratches.
Those scratches come from the ordinary life of a car: automatic wash brushes, dry wiping, the wrong towel, and years of sun. Light hits the ragged surface and scatters instead of reflecting, so the colour looks flat no matter how clean the car is.
What condition a car is usually in when someone books it
Most cars booked for correction are dark, black, navy, dark grey or red, and the owner has noticed circular swirl patterns under a streetlight or in low afternoon sun. The panels that show it worst are the bonnet, the roof and the boot lid, because they take the most direct sun and the most careless wiping.
Older Valley cars often arrive with something worse than swirls: oxidation, where sustained heat and sun have dulled the top of the clear coat until the paint looks chalky and lifeless. Cars that have lived outside in Modesto summers for years frequently look this way.
What the process involves
Correction only works on genuinely clean paint, so the car is washed by hand and the surface is decontaminated first. Anything still bonded to the clear coat would be ground into it during polishing, so this step is not optional.
The paint is then machine polished. This is a levelling process: a very small amount of clear coat is refined so the surface becomes flat again, and light reflects cleanly off it instead of scattering. Different panels and different paints respond differently, which is why the work is done in sections and checked in proper light as it goes rather than all at once.
Once the paint is corrected it is bare and unprotected. Most people follow correction with a ceramic coating so the finish they just paid for is not sanded back into place by the next few months of washing.
How to tell whether your car needs correction
Park in direct sun or shine a bright torch straight at a panel. If you see fine circular lines radiating out from the light, that is swirling, and correction is what removes it. If the colour looks hazy or milky compared to the paint inside the door jamb, that is oxidation on the outer surface, and the jamb is showing you what the paint should look like.
Drag a fingernail lightly across a scratch. If it catches, the damage is through the clear coat and polishing will improve how it looks without removing it. If it does not catch, it is a very good candidate for correction.
What paint correction does not fix
It does not repair deep scratches, chips down to primer or metal, or damage where the clear coat has already failed and is peeling or flaking. It is not body work: dents, creases and curb rash are separate services. It will not change the colour of your paint, and it cannot restore clear coat that is no longer there.
It also is not permanent protection. Corrected paint will swirl again if it goes back through a brush wash.

Common questions
Will paint correction remove every scratch?
No. Correction removes defects that sit within the clear coat, which covers most swirl marks, towel marks and light scratching. Damage deep enough to catch a fingernail, or down to primer, is beyond polishing.
Does paint correction damage my paint?
Done properly it refines the surface of the clear coat rather than removing meaningful thickness. That is exactly why the paint is assessed before work begins and the process is done in controlled sections instead of all at once.
Should I get a ceramic coating after correction?
Most people do. Once the paint is corrected it has no protection on it, and a coating keeps the corrected finish easier to wash and less likely to pick up fresh swirls.
My car is old and looks chalky. Can correction help?
Often, yes, if the clear coat is oxidised but still intact. If the clear coat has already failed and is flaking away, polishing cannot bring it back. We will tell you which one you are looking at before you commit.
