Headlight Restoration

Headlight restoration clears the yellow, cloudy film that forms on plastic headlight lenses so light can get out of them properly again. It is a visibility service before it is a cosmetic one: a hazed lens scatters the beam instead of projecting it down the road.
That matters here in particular. Tule fog settles across the San Joaquin Valley from roughly the start of November to the end of March once the first real rain has come through, and in fog a scattered beam bounces straight back at you. Clear lenses and clean glass stop being a detailing nicety and start being how you see.
Why headlights go cloudy in the first place
Modern headlights are polycarbonate plastic with a factory-applied protective coating on the outside. Sun is what kills that coating. Long Valley summers of sustained UV break it down, and once it fails the bare plastic underneath oxidises, which is the yellow, milky look you can see from across a car park.
Highway miles accelerate it. Sand and grit thrown up off Interstate 5, Interstate 205 and Highway 99 sandblast the lens face, and bug splatter that sits on a hot lens etches it.
What condition lenses are usually in
Most cars that come in are eight years old or more and the owner has noticed that night driving feels dimmer than it used to. From the front, the lenses look frosted rather than glass-clear, and often yellow-brown at the top where the sun hits hardest.
Some cars arrive with the haze on the inside of the lens instead of the outside, which is a different problem entirely, it means the housing has lost its seal and moisture is getting in. That cannot be polished out from the outside.
What the process involves
The lens is cleaned and the surrounding paint and trim are protected. The failed, oxidised outer layer of the plastic is then worked back through progressively finer stages until the surface is smooth and optically clear again, rather than merely wiped over with a filler that looks clear for a fortnight.
Because the original factory protection is gone by then, the restored surface is finished with protection of its own. Without that step, bare polycarbonate sitting in Modesto sun will simply start hazing again.
How to tell if restoration will work on your car
Look at the lens in daylight. If the haze is on the outside surface and the lens feels slightly rough or chalky to a fingertip, restoration is exactly the right service. If you wet the lens with water and it suddenly looks clear, that is another good sign, water is temporarily filling the roughened surface.
If there is condensation, water droplets or standing moisture inside the housing, or if the lens is deeply cracked, no amount of external polishing helps. That housing needs to be replaced, and we will tell you that rather than sell you the service.
What headlight restoration does not fix
It does not fix a blown bulb, a failed ballast, faulty wiring or a misaimed beam. It does not fix internal fogging or a cracked housing. It does not change the colour temperature of your lights or make an old halogen system perform like a new one, it restores the lens so the light you already have can actually get out.

Does headlight restoration actually improve night visibility?
Yes, when the haze is on the outer surface. A clouded lens scatters the beam instead of projecting it forward, which is most noticeable on unlit roads and in tule fog. Clearing the lens lets the existing bulb do its job.
My headlights are foggy on the inside. Can you fix that?
No. Internal fogging means the housing seal has failed and moisture is getting in. That is a replacement, not a restoration, and we will tell you straight away if that is what we are looking at.
Will they go cloudy again?
Bare polycarbonate will haze in sustained sun, which is why the restored lens is given protection as part of the work rather than left bare. Cars that park outside in full Valley sun all summer live a harder life than cars that are garaged.
