What condition a car is usually in when someone books it

Most cars that come in for a full detail have not had one in a long time. The paint still has colour but it has gone flat, water no longer beads anywhere, and the lower panels carry a dull film that a hose will not shift. The wheels have brake dust baked into the face. The windscreen has a haze that shows up badly at sunrise and sunset on McHenry.

Inside, the pattern is just as predictable: crumbs and sand in the seat rails, cupholders that have been sticky for months, a rear bench that has carried kids, dogs or work gear, and door jambs nobody has ever wiped. Some cars arrive before a sale or a trade-in. Others arrive because the owner has simply had enough of sitting in it.

What the process involves, in plain language

The exterior is washed by hand so the dirt is lifted off the paint rather than dragged across it, then wheels, tyres and wheel wells are cleaned separately because that is where the heaviest contamination lives. Bug residue on the front bumper and mirrors is worked on its own. Glass is cleaned inside and out, which matters more than people expect once fog season arrives.

Inside, everything loose comes out first. Carpets and upholstery are vacuumed thoroughly, including under the seats and in the rails. Hard surfaces, the dash, console, door cards, vents and jambs are cleaned by hand. If the interior is beyond a clean, the team will tell you it needs interior shampoo or leather conditioning instead of pretending a wipe-down will do it.

Before the work starts, we walk the car with you. Anything that will change the scope, heavy pet hair, deep staining, paint that needs correction rather than cleaning, is discussed first so nothing is a surprise when you pick the car up.

How to tell whether your car needs a detail

Run the back of your hand over the paint after a wash. If it feels gritty rather than smooth, the surface is contaminated and a normal wash is not reaching it. If water sits in flat sheets instead of beading, there is nothing left protecting the clear coat. If the interior smells of anything at all when you open the door after it has been shut overnight, the fabric is holding it.

Newer cars that are washed regularly can often skip straight to protection. Cars that live outside, tow, carry animals or spend summers parked in full Valley sun almost always need the detail first.

What detailing does not fix

Detailing cleans; it does not repair. It will not remove swirl marks or scratches you can feel with a fingernail, that is paint correction. It will not make hazy, yellowed headlight lenses clear again, that is headlight restoration. It will not straighten a dent, repair curb rash, or fix a torn seat.

It also is not permanent. A detail resets the car; keeping it there is a question of how it is washed afterwards and whether the paint is protected.
