Hand Wash
A hands-on wash for a properly finished vehicle.
A hand wash is exactly what it sounds like: the vehicle is washed by hand, panel by panel, rather than pulled through a tunnel of spinning brushes. At CAR PRETTY in Modesto it is both a standalone service and the first stage of everything else we do to a car.
The problem it solves is contact damage. Automatic washes reuse the same brushes on every vehicle that came before yours, which means whatever grit was on those cars is dragged across your clear coat. That is where the fine circular swirl marks in dark paint come from.
What condition a car is usually in when it arrives
Typically it is a daily driver with a week or two of Central Valley road film on it. In summer that is dust and bug splatter across the nose and mirrors. After the first rains it is a grey film across the lower doors and rear hatch, thrown up off wet roads. Neither of those comes off with a rinse.
Some cars arrive with water spots from sprinklers or from being washed in direct sun. Those need dwelling on rather than scrubbing, which is precisely what a tunnel cannot do.
What the process involves
The vehicle is rinsed first so the loose grit is off the paint before anything touches it. Wheels and tyres are done separately, because brake dust and road tar belong nowhere near the mitt that goes on your bonnet. The body is then washed from the top down, so the dirtiest sections, the rockers and lower bumpers, are done last.
The car is then dried deliberately rather than left to air dry, because Valley water is hard and evaporating droplets leave mineral spots behind. Glass and door jambs are handled at the same time.
How to tell whether a hand wash is enough
If the car is simply dirty, a hand wash is the right call. If the paint still feels rough after it dries, or if you can see fine swirl marks in the sun, washing has hit its limit and the paint needs correction. If the inside is what is bothering you, a hand wash will not touch that, book a detail or an interior shampoo.
As a rule of thumb: washing maintains a car. Detailing and correction reset one.
What a hand wash does not do
It does not remove swirls, scratches or oxidation. It does not clear a hazy headlight lens. It does not deep-clean carpets or upholstery, and it does not add lasting protection to the paint, that is what a ceramic coating is for.
It also is not a substitute for a full detail before a sale. A washed car and a detailed car look completely different once a buyer opens the door.

Is a hand wash really better than an automatic car wash?
For paint condition, yes. Automatic brushes carry grit from previous vehicles across your clear coat, which is a common source of swirl marks in dark paint. Hand washing lifts dirt off the panel instead of dragging it along.
How often should I wash my car in the Central Valley?
It depends on where you park and drive. Cars kept outside, driven on farm roads, or parked under trees need washing more often, because dust, sap and bird droppings sit on the clear coat and etch it if they are left.
Can you wash my car if it has a ceramic coating?
Yes, and hand washing is the right way to maintain a coated car. A coating makes the surface easier to clean; it does not make it immune to contact damage from harsh brushes.
