Leather Conditioning
Clean and condition leather interior surfaces.
Leather conditioning is cleaning and then re-conditioning the leather surfaces in a car's cabin, mainly seats, but also armrests, steering wheels and door inserts. It addresses a problem Valley cars get badly: leather that has been baked by long, hot summers until it is dry, stiff and dull.
Leather in a parked car sees more heat than almost any other surface in the vehicle. When it dries out it loses flexibility, and inflexible leather is what cracks along the seat bolsters where you slide in and out every day.
What condition seats are usually in
The driver's seat almost always shows it first: the outer bolster is worn shiny and grey, and the seat base has lost its soft texture. Light-coloured leather picks up dye transfer from jeans and looks permanently grubby. Black leather goes ashy rather than rich.

What the process involves

Press your thumb into the seat base. Healthy leather feels supple and springs back; dry leather feels stiff and boardy. Look along the bolster you sit against: if the grain pattern is fading to smooth and the colour is lifting, the hide is drying out and the next stage is cracking.

What leather conditioning does not fix
It does not repair tears, splits, holes or cracks, and it does not re-dye faded leather. It will not rebuild a collapsed bolster foam. It has no effect on carpets or cloth seats, that is interior shampoo.
It is also maintenance rather than a one-off cure. Leather in a Valley car dries out again with every hot summer, which is why it is worth doing before the cracking starts rather than after.

Common questions
How often should leather seats be conditioned?
In this climate, more often than in a mild one. Sustained summer heat is what dries the hide, so cars that park outside benefit from being treated before and after the hottest part of the year rather than once in a while.
Can conditioning fix cracked seats?
No. Once leather has cracked or split, the damage is structural. Conditioning makes the surrounding hide look and feel better and helps slow further drying, but it cannot close a crack.
Will my seats be slippery afterwards?
They should not be. The conditioner is worked in and the finish levelled so the leather feels natural rather than greasy. A slick, shiny seat usually means too much product was left on the surface.
